Tango declared part of the world’s cultural heritage

TANGO, which claims to have its roots in Argentina and Uruguay, yet danced today in the whole world, was declared part of the world’s cultural heritage by the UNESCO on Wednesday 30th of September 2009, during UNESCO’s summit in Abu Dhabi.

“The Argentinean and Uruguayan tradition of the tango, now familiar around the world, was developed by the urban lower classes in Buenos Aires and Montevideo in the Rio de la Plata basin,” says UNESCO’s web portal.

“Danced in the traditional dance halls of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, the tango is popular all over the world due to its community spirit, adapting itself to the changes of time,” UNESCO adds.

The Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, often threatened by decline or disappearance, consists of actions, knowledge or know-how, recognized by some groups or communities, which can be identified as part of their cultural heritage.
